A five-year-old boy received multiple injuries after a stray dog attacked him on Sunday afternoon in East Delhi’s Shakarpur, said police. While the child’s family has filed a complaint with police, urging that the dog be relocated, a protest broke out in the area after a video showed the animal being beaten allegedly by a police officer, leading to calls for rescue.

According to the boy’s father, the family was visiting a relative in the area around 2 pm when a stray dog suddenly attacked the child from behind.

“The dog had already tried to bite a person… When they shooed the animal away, the dog pounced on my son. My relative came running and tried to rescue my son. Then we took our child to a hospital,” he said, adding that the hospital told them to inform the police since the dog had to be kept under observation for seven days.

A written complaint has been filed by the father with the Station House Officer, Shakurpur, requesting that the dog be shifted to an animal shelter, to avoid future cases of dog bites.

“The police told us that they had contacted the MCD, which is responsible for taking the dog, but they did not respond,” he said.
When contacted, the MCD did not respond to the queries.

Meanwhile, a protest broke out on Sunday evening in the area as the demonstrators claimed that the stray dog was brutally beaten by an officer.

A woman, who called the ambulance for the dog’s treatment, said, “A message was circulated that a dog had to be rescued… some saw it as a case of cruelty and reached the location but still we all were requesting to not hit the dog and wait for the ambulance to come. The dog was recently relocated, and I called a private ambulance which took the dog,” she added.

The police officer, however, said that he was just performing his duty. “I have the responsibility of saving citizens, will I not save them from a dog? Either I could have made a video of a dog biting the child or could have been rescued. I chose the latter, if this is my mistake, I’ll choose to do that again,” the officer added.

The incident comes days after the Supreme Court modified its August 11 directive, which issued directions for locking up all stray dogs in the NCR. In its modified order, the top court said that the strays should be returned to their original locality after vaccination, sterilisaiton and deworming. The court also said that the aggressive dogs should be moved to shelters.
