Four Faridabad police personnel were injured Saturday when residents of the Jamalgarh village in Haryana’s Nuh district allegedly attacked them while they were detaining a suspect in a bike theft case.
The incident occurred around 1 pm when a police team attached to the Sikrona police post of the Faridabad crime branch was leaving with one Salim, who had allegedly bought a stolen motorcycle, in a private car. A white pick-up vehicle allegedly followed them, and at Aadarav Chowk, a group of about 20 people, including the suspect’s family members, pelted stones at the police vehicle.
The police team was led by Sub Inspector Sunder and included Assistant Sub Inspector Samsuddin, Head Constable Yunis Khan, and Constables Vikrant and Nitin. The police car overturned after the driver, Constable Vikrant, tried to evade the attack.
As the police personnel got out of the car, the driver of the pick-up vehicle attacked them. The mob allegedly attempted to free the suspect but fled when additional police force, including Constable Bhupender, arrived in a vehicle.
The Faridabad police registered an FIR at the Punhana police station late Saturday night after the complainant, ASI Samsuddin, finished receiving treatment. The case’s investigating officer, ASI Mahesh Kumar, said the police are conducting raids to catch the attackers, and several previously unknown suspects have been identified.
The police invoked sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to punishment for attempt to murder, voluntarily causing grievous hurt to a public servant while on duty, assault and criminal force against a public servant, liability for unlawful assembly with common intention, armed rioting, and obstructing a public servant on duty.
SI Sunder is being treated at a private hospital in Gurgaon, while the others are receiving care at hospitals in Punhana and Faridabad, and all are in stable condition. Salim is still under police custody, Investigating Officer Kumar said.
