The robbery was nothing short of a "movie-style crime", said police (File Photo)In a joint operation by the Delhi Police Crime Branch and the Rajasthan Police, three men have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a high-profile robbery that took place at Sri Ganganagar on October 18.
The robbery was nothing short of a “movie-style crime”, said police. The assailants — identified as Baljinder Singh, the mastermind, Saravjeet Singh, and Surender Singh — disguised as police officers, allegedly entered the house of Gurcharan Singh at Gujarawali Kat in a police car with a red beacon. They were armed. Threatening Gurcharan and his family at gunpoint, the robbers began ransacking the house, searching through the almirahs for valuables.
However, Gurcharan’s quick thinking led him to raise an alarm, alerting the neighbors, said police. The robbers, having stolen mobile phones and other valuables by then, fled the scene.
Based on a complaint filed by Gurcharan, a case was registered at Keshri Singhpura police station in Sri Ganganagar. A reward of Rs 10,000 was announced for any information leading to the arrest of the accused. As the probe progressed, the Rajasthan Police traced a cellphone number used by the robbers to a location in Capital, triggering the involvement of the Delhi Police.
Given the modus operandi of the robbers, the Crime Branch team believed the suspects were likely based in Delhi, a theory further corroborated by their distinctive dialect and behaviour.
“The team analysed Call Detail Records (CDRs) of the cell phone. It also profiled numerous interstate robbers and began ascertaining their sources of livelihood. Based on the clue that the accused had posed as police officers during the robbery, and their distinct dialect, the team inferred that the suspects were likely residents of West Delhi,” said DCP (Crime) Harsh Indora.
Police said Baljinder Singh (50) — whose profile came up in Delhi Police’s criminal database, showing his involvement in 52 criminal cases across India — soon emerged as a key suspect. The Crime Branch team found that Baljinder, who had served a 17-year sentence under the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA), had recently been released on bail.
Focusing on Chander Vihar in Delhi, where Baljinder was believed to be residing, the team carried out several raids. The breakthrough came when they apprehended Baljinder on October 22. Police said he admitted to his role in the robbery and revealed the names of his accomplices — Saravjeet and Surender.
Saravjeet, Baljinder’s 25-year-old son, was the next to be arrested, followed by Surender (40), who was arrested from his residence in Nihal Vihar. Both men were part of the criminal network that had executed the robbery, said police.
According to police, Baljinder has cases registered against him in various states, including Punjab, Delhi and Maharashtra. “His criminal activities ranged from armed robberies to extortion and violent crimes. Saravjeet, though less experienced, also had a case lodged against him in Punjab. Surender, a close associate of Baljinder, is also being investigated for prior criminal activity,” said an officer.
