(File Photo)The Delhi Police have arrested three men who allegedly posed as discom officials and tried to extort money from construction site owners for using residential electricity for commercial purposes.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Rajesh Deo received a control room call on July 10 about BSES officials demanding Rs 12 lakh from a household in Maharani Bagh, New Friends Colony. The New Friends Colony station promptly dispatched a police team to the location.
A team led by SHO Rajendra Kumar Jain conducted raids and tracked down the caller’s phone number. With the help of the caller’s current location, one of the accused was arrested. Additionally, two accomplices of the accused were apprehended based on information provided by the arrested after raids were conducted at multiple locations.
“On sustained interrogation, it was revealed that the accused posed as fake BSES officials and visited under-construction sites to extort money from owners of the site in the name of fine for using domestic electricity for commercial purposes,” said an officer.
“It has been revealed that they had extorted money from many others before, but those incidents were not reported,” said the DCP.
“It was also revealed that these three worked as recovery agents for BSES through a private company. After completing their tenure, they started extorting money from people,” the DCP added.
The accused have been identified as Shammi Chadha, a property dealer; Dinesh Kumar, a momos vendor with two previous cases; and Shakil Ahmed, an electrician with no previous cases.
