24-yr-old lands behind the bars for planning friend’s murder

The two men were in love with the same girl who they met on Facebook.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested by the Ghaziabad railway police for plotting the murder of his friend Nishant Sharma. Accused Rajat Dev Pandit,a resident of Jharkhand, however, did not execute the plan.

Police said Rajat had planned to kill Nishant, after both developed feelings for one girl. The two had never met the Mumbai-based girl in person, but were friends with her on the social networking site,Facebook. Rajat and Nishant were also Facebook friends first but had met in the past.

Police officers said they made the arrest after a routine check on the New Year’s day at the Ghaziabad railway station. “We were checking individuals for illegal contraband and other items. We arrested Rajat after we found weapons in his baggage as he was standing in the queue to buy a ticket. During questioning,he revealed his intention to kill his friend,Nishant,” said an officer. The police added that a revolver and two knives had been recovered from his possession.

Officers said Rajat and Nishant had befriended the girl on Facebook over a year ago. “Rajat has told us that the two friends spoke to each other and the girl frequently. Close to about a month ago,Rajat told Nishant that he was in love with her,and his friend told him that he felt the same. Rajat said the girl stopped replying to his messages soon after that, and he suspected that Nishant had asked her to do so. This enraged Rajat and he came to Ghaziabad with the intention of killing his friend,” said Inspector S K Rana.

The police said Rajat came to the area three days ago and met Nishant on Saturday. “While he had gone to Nishant’s home in Delhi to kill him,he did not eventually do so. Rajat said when Nishant told him how much he loved the girl,he could not bring himself to commit the crime. However,Rajat did threaten Nishant that if he found out that the latter had indeed told the girl to stop talking to him,he would return to kill him,” said an officer.

Nishant studies engineering in an institute in Delhi. Officials said Rajat was produced before a magistrate who sent him to judicial custody. Cases related to illegal possession of firearms and criminal conspiracy have also been registered against him.
