More police personnel landed on the wrong side of the law last year as compared to the previous year. In 2010,1,303 Delhi Police personnel were punished — an 18-fold increase from the 2009 figure of 74. Constables topped the list, with 474 landing on the rolls.

“There is a huge increase in the number. It means we are leaving no scope for black sheep to go scot-free. Whenever there is a complaint substantiated by evidence,we take strong action,” a senior police officer said.

Thirty-five policemen, including 23 constables and five head constables, were dismissed from service following their involvement in criminal or corruption cases last year, the first in the last four years.

According to police data, only 74 personnel were punished in 2009,102 in 2008 and 197 in 2007. Last year,997 policemen were given minor punishments and 218 major punishments, while 49 faced departmental inquiry and four personnel were transferred to non-sensitive units.

“Two assistant commissioners were awarded minor punishments, while 145 inspectors and 112 sub-inspectors also faced action last year,” the officer said.

Between 2007 and 2009,seven deputy commissioners and 17 assistant commissioners were punished. According to the officer, the Vigilance Wing of the Delhi Police conducted 419 surprise checks at police stations and posts, during which action was initiated against 48 personnel for dereliction of duty. The Crime Branch is investigating the cases.
