1 killed, 4 injured as Creta car hits e-rickshaw in Gurgaon; driver arrested

A man was killed and four others sustained critical injuries after a car collided with an e-rickshaw near Shankar Chowk in Gurgaon Monday, the police said, adding that the car driver was arrested for allegedly driving recklessly.

The accused was identified as Jammu resident Ayush, 28. The police also seized the Creta car involved in the incident.

“The deceased, likely aged around 50, is yet to be identified,” said Balraj Yadav, Inspector and Station House Officer, Udyog Vihar police station.

The injured include the e-rickshaw driver, Sunil Mahto, 37.

Officers at Udyog Vihar police station said they were alerted about the accident at around 6.30 am.

A police team rushed to the spot and found the Creta car which had rear-ended an e-rickshaw.

The driver of the Creta was detained from the spot, and the injured were rushed to a private hospital.

One of the injured succumbed during treatment, three were referred to another facility and one was stable enough to provide a statement, the police said.

The complainant, Ranjit, from Alipur village in Uttar Pradesh’s Farrukhnagar, stated that he was traveling in the e-rickshaw with three other passengers from Kapashera Border towards Shankar Chowk.

Near DLF Cyber Park in Sector 20, the Creta car, driven negligently, rammed into the e-rickshaw from behind, causing the accident, he said.

Based on Ranjit’s written complaint, a case was registered for rash driving, causing grievous hurt, and death by negligence.

“The accused stayed with his family in Sector 48 and worked in a BPO company. He was returning home from work, and was under the influence of alcohol. The rickshaw hit the footpath due to the impact of the collision. The injured are still critical,” Inspector Yadav said.

The investigation is underway, and further details are awaited, a police spokesperson said.
