Gurgaon civic polls: BJP’s Madhu Azad becomes city’s first ever female mayor
The victory of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Councillor Madhu Azad, who is responsible for Ward 7 and bagged the post of Mayor, gave the city it’s first ever female mayor.

Female councillors were the centre of attention in the elections held in Gurgaon on Friday afternoon to determine who would hold the posts of mayor, deputy mayor, and senior deputy mayor, all three of which were bagged by women.
The victory of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Councillor Madhu Azad, who is responsible for Ward 7 and bagged the post of Mayor, gave the city it’s first ever female mayor. Azad, whose husband, Ashok Azad, has been associated with the party for several years, won the post unopposed.
She had been nominated for the post by Rimple Yadav, MCG Councillor of ward 5, and had been supported in the move by councilor of ward 19, Ashwani Sharma.
The post of mayor had, this year, been reserved for a woman from a scheduled caste.
The position of deputy mayor was similarly won by Sunita Yadav, who is the councilor for ward 33 and was also chosen unanimously.
The real twist in the proceedings on Friday afternoon, however, came with the election of the councilor of Ward 9, Pramila Kablana, to the post of senior deputy mayor. Kablana had stood for the elections as an independent candidate with the backing of the Congress.
She won the post of senior deputy mayor by securing 23 of the 35 votes casted by councillors.
The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) elections were held on September 25. Independents had dominated the list of victors when the results were declared the same day, securing a total of 20 seats. The BJP, meanwhile, secured only 14 seats, despite fielding candidates in all 35 wards. The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) had also won one seat.
In the weeks following the election, however, the BJP managed to secure the support of 12 councillors, hence securing the majority in the civic body.
