Moga: Girl shoots herself dead after scoring less in maths

Kaur shot herself dead with her father’s licensed revolver at her residence in New Apex Colony in Moga.

The incident happened when her father Gurdev Singh was out in the court to get her domicile certificates prepared for admission in an engineering college. Her mother and younger brother were out to buy groceries.

When her mother and brother returned home, they knocked the door but none opened. When it was forced open, Simranjeet was lying in a pool of blood with a bullet through her forehead.

Her father Gurdev Singh, a car dealer, said, “Simranjeet was aiming to be an engineer but was upset over 27 marks that she scored in mathematics. She had fear in her mind that it will not be possible for her to clear the exam now.”

The Moga police denied foul play and said the girl shot herself dead with a licensed 0.32 bore revolver of her father when none was at home. Local BJP leader Tarlochan Singh Gill, a family acquaintance, informed police around noon about the incident. “She was an intelligent and sincere girl. An average student that she was, it just hit her too hard when her friends scored better marks in maths and she got 27,” said Gill.

Her family also said that ‘her friends scoring better marks in maths sent her in depression’. “We never questioned her that’s why she scored less in maths. We were in fact preparing for her admission in engineering and were confident that she will clear re-appear exam. But since result was declared on May 13, she was overthinking about it,” said Hardeep, the girl’s uncle.

Moga SSP HS Pannu denied if there was any foul play. “We have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 CrPC. No suicide note has been recovered and victim’s family has claimed that she was upset over mathematics score. One bullet crossed her forehead and post mortem has been done. We have found no proofs of family harassing or scolding her for scoring less,” he said.

The girl was cremated in Moga after the post mortem. This year, 53,371 students appeared for class XII PSEB maths exam of which 87.33% (46,609) students cleared it.
