Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin inaugurated a first-of-its-kind Jallikattu stadium in Madurai on Wednesday and took an oblique dig at the Centre for not yet constructing a proposed All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the district.

Addressing the gathering at the Keelakarai village near Alanganallur, Stalin said he takes pride in saying that history would remember him as the person who built the Kalaignar Centenary Eruthazhuvuthal Arena for the bull-taming sport, built on 66 acres at Rs 44 crore.

He said within three years of assuming power, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government built three major cultural symbols of Tamil Nadu — referring to the Keeladi Museum, which showcases the history of Tamils, Kalaignar Centenary Library and the Jallikattu arena which can accommodate 5,000 spectators in its three-tier gallery.

“There was also one scheme announced by the BJP-led Union government in 2015, and it has yet to see the light. If it comes to your mind at this juncture, I am not responsible for that,” Stalin said, without naming the proposed AIIMS, the construction of which is yet to begin.

Citing the Jallikattu protest in 2017 against a Supreme Court order banning it, Stalin alleged that the then ruling AIADMK had unleashed violence on people who had peacefully conducted the protests.

He said every year there would be obstacles to conducting the Jallikattu event during the Pongal harvest festival and due to the persistence of his Dravidian model government, a permanent solution came up as the Supreme Court in May 2023 upheld Tamil Nadu law allowing Jallikattu.

“At this point, I would like to say that caste and religious differences were created to break the unity of Tamils. Hence, understanding this, let us set aside these differences and conduct this event together with an identity as ‘Tamils’… Let us witness the event with unity. Long live Tamizh, long live Tamil Nadu,” Stalin said.
