A day after supporters of Tamil Nadu Municipal Administration Minister K N Nehru went on a rampage at his residence, DMK MP Tiruchy Siva said on Thursday that he was “deeply pained” by the incident.
“I am a firm party man; I always believe party is above any individual. I was brought up with that spirit since my early years in politics and I still follow it. Since my party is more important to me, I never made an issue about many things and never complained about it to anyone. I am deeply pained by the recent incident. I need to speak to my assistants…elders at home. They are all deeply upset with what happened when I was away,” Siva said.
Over 15 men carrying sticks broke the lights at the gate of Siva’s home in Trichy and damaged the windscreen of a car and a two-wheeler parked on the premises. The vandalism was allegedly in retaliation to Siva’s supporters showing black flags to Nehru earlier in the day while he was on his way to inaugurate a badminton court under the Namaku Naame scheme in the SBI colony in Trichy. The MP’s supporters were reportedly upset with Nehru for not including their leader’s name in the invite and not inviting him.
Siva, who was in Bahrain to participate in a conference, returned to Trichy on Thursday. When asked about AIADMK interim general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami’s comments on the deterioration of law and order in the state, the senior DMK leader said that he was not in the mood to say anything.
The police arrested five DMK functionaries in connection with the incident. DMK general secretary Durai Murugan issued a statement saying that the men who had indulged in the attack had been suspended from all posts, including primary membership, for violating party discipline and acting in a way that brought disrepute to the party.
