Renowned Tamil actor and the founder of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), Captain Vijayakanth, has experienced a slight deterioration in health over the past 24 hours, necessitating an extended period of hospitalisation, according to a statement by a Chennai hospital on Wednesday.

Admitted to Chennai’s MIOT Hospital earlier this month with severe cold and cough symptoms, the 71-year-old will now remain under medical supervision for an additional 14 days, the statement said.

The hospital said that while there has been overall improvement in Vijayakanth’s condition, “…in the last 24 hours, his health is not stable, and he needs help with pulmonary treatment. We hope he gets well soon. So, he needs another 14-day hospitalisation to get recovered.”

Hospital sources and the medical bulletin indicated optimism about his recovery, despite the recent setback.

His health has been a concern for several years, leading to him stepping back from active politics, entrusting the responsibilities of DMDK to his wife, Premalatha.

Vijayakanth, a prominent actor in Tamil cinema, embarked on his political journey in 2005. In the 2006 Assembly elections, he secured an MLA seat and garnered a vote share of 8 per cent.
