Youth wings stake claim over wards

When it comes to distribution of tickets, the youth wings of the party have to contend with being given one or two seats. Youth power may be the latest move used by political parties when it comes to campaigning prior to the civic body elections. With the senior leaders jostling amongst themselves for the tickets, the situation seems bleak for the youngsters.

Members of the Chandigarh Territorial Youth Congress (CTYC) have filed application forms for most wards of the Municipal Corporation. The members have started contacting residents of these wards at a personal level. The party already has a large number of senior leaders as well as sitting councillors to accommodate.

President of CTYC Gurpreet Gabi said,“The decision rests with the senior leaders. The members are always actively involved in the campaign. Over the past 18 months we have undertaken a number of initiatives to highlight social evils like female foeticide. An anti-drug campaign was also started. The youth have a new vision and fresh ideas.”

The unit had earlier started a programme,‘Youth Congress at your doorstep’ wherein the members went to the residents to know their problems and find solutions.

Meanwhile in the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM),five office bearers have staked claim to seats from different wards. The members have been holding programmes in different wards highlighting issues like unemployment, education, admission and drug abuse among others that impact the youth.

President of city unit of BJYM Maheshinder Singh said,“In the previous elections also young leaders were given a chance to contest. All over India BJP is supporting inclusion of youngsters in the local bodies. While there is no fixed number of seats that are present,we are hopeful that some of us will be given a chance to contest.”

Congress leader H S Lucky, who contested the previous MC elections when he was president of CTYC,said that the tickets will be given to the youngsters based on their visibility, ability to win and loyalty to party. “The number of wards are limited. There are a number of sitting councillors and senior leaders who are to be adjusted,” he said, adding that the youth would be given representation when the tickets are distributed.
