A two-and-half-year-old boy was rescued on Friday, within 12 hours of his abduction from Ludhiana’s Garhi Tarkhana village, police said, adding that the neighbours arranged to sell him off to a childless couple in Sirsa.
Khanna police identified the victim as Laksh Kumar alias Laddoo, son of migrant labourer Vikas Sahni. The police said the neighbours abducted Laksh on Thursday when he was playing outside his house, to sell him off to the couple from Sirsa’s Dana Mandi in Haryana.
Khanna SSP Jyoti Yadav said, “The footage showed the child being taken away. We alerted Sirsa CIA staff, and within hours, a bus heading towards Bihar was intercepted. The police rescued the child and nabbed the accused.”
The arrested accused, involved in the kidnapping, were identified as Ramesh Kumar, Chandan Sahni, Babita and her husband, Jenath — residents of Garhi Tarkhana village.
The couple from Sirsa — Rita Devi and her husband, Santosh Sahni — were also arrested.
During questioning, Ramesh and Chandan confessed that they had abducted the child on Babita’s directions, the police said. Further, Babita confessed that she and her husband abducted the child for her sister Rita. According to the police, Babita said her sister Rita and Santosh — the couple from Sirsa — were childless.
The SSP said Babita had struck the deal with Chandan and Ramesh for Rs 1.29 lakh. However, she only paid Rs 59,000 to them, while the remaining amount of Rs 70,000 was pending.
Yadav said the operation to recover the child was held in coordination with Sirsa Police. An FIR was registered under BNS section 127 (6) (wrongful confinement) at Machhiwara police station.
