With not much to show as achievements in the past few months,the Mayor in his Independence Day speech harped on the ongoing projects or those initiated in the previous years.

The Independence Day function of the Municipal Corporation was held at the Fire Station,Sector 17. While in the past,the function has been held at the MC building,this year with additional storeys being added to the building,the venue had to be shifted.

Among the achievements of the Municipal Corporation listed was the overbridge in Sector 17 that has been under construction since last year. While one of the mayors had taken credit for holding the ground-breaking ceremony at the site,another had for initiating construction. In his speech at the Independence Day celebration,Chawla said that the overbridge would be completed by September this year.

The Mayor said that this year they had started a drive to make the city free of construction waste. He said that though 1,000 truckloads of construction waste has been removed from the sectors,the drive has not been completely successful.

Complaining that the city residents were not providing support,he said that local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal had provided a sum of Rs 45 lakh from the MPLAD funds to purchase tractor fittings that would enable picking construction waste from the V-6 roads and backlanes.

The project of construction of RCC box for channelisation of open nallah passing through Manimajra Township has been a part of the speeches of the previous Mayor as well. This time also the project found a place in the Mayor’s speech with this having been completed.

Holding of cultural programmes by the MC were among the other achievements listed by Chawla. The two-day Teej celebrations,Lohri on the theme of saving girl child and a prayer ceremony in the memory of Uttarakhand victims were among the activities organised. The Mayor also talked about the installation of booster stations for solving the problem of low water pressure. The Japanese garden that has been under construction for the past one year is also among the list of achievements.

Among the projects that have been undertaken by MC this year are the launch of the Management Information System that would enable consumers to see water bills online. A proposal is on the anvil to provide LED streetlights in different sectors. Anti-rabies injections were made available at a subsidised rate of Rs 100. The Mayor also talked about the upkeep of the cow sheds in the city.
