With the Delhi University (DU) having converted its undergraduate courses into four years degree courses, the Panjab University (PU) claims that many students from Delhi are applying for admissions here and it will lead to a huge demand for hostels. The varsity has over 6,000 seats in the hostels for boys and girls.
Moreover, this year, the varsity has received five times the number of admission forms than the number of seats that each course offer in myriad streams. In accordance with the rules, hostels are allotted on the basis of merit only.
In order to bring transparency in the allocation of hostel seats, the Dean Students Welfare (DSW) office has asked the departments to upload all the information pertaining to merit lists, waiting lists and of students who would be allotted hostels,on the varsitys website.
There are seven boys and nine girls hostels on the campus. Girls and boys hostels have over 3,000 seats each. Another girls hostel is coming up in the southern campus,Sector 25 and this new hostel will have 350 seats. Construction is on and it will take couple of months for completion, said DSW Prof A S Ahluwalia while talking to Newsline.
PU has received a tremendous response when it comes to admissions. With the DU having made all the undergraduate courses of four years, the varsity will surely be getting students from Delhi as well.
There will be a huge rush for hostels, but we have to follow the rules and as per them, seats are to be given on the basis of merit. We are constructing another hostel so more students will be accommodated, he added.
When asked about the idea of online allocation of hostel seats, the DSW said,It is partially online as departments have been asked to upload as much information as they can. It is not solely online as some of the departments lack certain infrastructure.
