‘Why such curbs only on women’: NSUI protests PU’s restrictive undertaking for night outing
The NSUI further said: “If safety is a concern, the university should improve campus security infrastructure, rather than curtailing women’s freedom.”

The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) on Wednesday staged a protest outside Girls Hostel no. 6 of the Panjab University (PU), opposing a recently imposed undertaking that seeks to limit the number of night outings for women hostel residents.
According to the new rules, parents are required to specify in writing how many times their daughters can step out of the hostel at night, and if a student exceeds that number, her parents will be informed. Calling this move “highly regressive, patriarchal and discriminatory”, NSUI has questioned “why such restrictions are being imposed only on women”.
Led by NSUI leaders, the protesters on Wednesday gathered in large numbers and shouted slogans like “equal rights for all students” and “stop moral policing”, while demanding an immediate rollback of the undertaking. “It a clear violation of women’s autonomy and freedom of movement” they said.
The NSUI further said: “If safety is a concern, the university should improve campus security infrastructure, rather than curtailing women’s freedom.”
The protest saw participation from hostel residents, who expressed deep concern over the university’s continued attempts to impose “moral policing” through administrative mechanisms.
Following the protest, the authorities have ensured this undertaking will not be taken from students.
