A 60-year-old man in Kochi allegedly beat a woman to death at his home but dozed off near the body while trying to dispose of it, said police, adding that he has been arrested.
Police said the incident came to light on Saturday at Konthuruthy, within the Kochi corporation area’s limits, after municipal sanitation workers found K K George sleeping near the body of a woman in a narrow lane in front of his house.
On being alerted by women sanitation workers, police took George into custody. His arrest was recorded later at the station after questioning. The woman, who the accused claimed was a sex worker, is yet to be identified.
According to Kochi Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Siby Tom, George has admitted to the crime. “According to his statement, he had picked up a sex worker from the South Railway Station on Friday night. But they had an altercation over money… and George hit the woman on the head with an iron rod,” he said.
According to police, on realising that the woman was dead, George tried to dispose of the body. He found an empty packing sack and stuffed the body inside. While taking out the sack, police said George, who was reportedly in an inebriated condition, collapsed and dozed off.
Police have found bloodstains at the crime scene.
Local corporation councillor, Bency Benny, said George was an attendant, helping the elderly and the indisposed at their homes.
At the time of the incident, his wife was away with their daughter, who is married. George’s son is studying abroad.
