These boys are innocent. They have not committed the crime for which they are being held guilty. As a father,my hope for justice is still alive, even though I fully respect todays verdict of the trial court, said Dr D K Verma, father of Abhinav Verma, one of the four accused convicted in the ragging case.
Dr Verma,an associate professor of surgery at the Indira Gandhi Medical College in Shimla, has been shutting between Shimla and Dharamsala to defend his son and the three other co-accused all of them coming from rural background.
I have not gone through the detailed judgment. But I feel the court has ignored some of the material evidence, which if studied closely will show these boys are innocent. For example,on the medical side, the cause of Aman Kachroos death has been stated as subarachnoid haemorrhage (neurogenic shock). If that had been the case,it could have caused intolerable headache, giddiness and nausea, which were never noticed in Aman till he collapsed.
Secondly, there is a report about a bilateral subconjunctival haemorrhage (unmistakable redness of the eyes),but strangely this was not noticed by anyone for 48 hours. I believe it was not there. The prosecution also did not present record of the mobile phone calls, which the deceased made to different people. Had that been done, perhaps new facts could have come to light, he added.
Dr Verma said he believed there was need for a debate on certain findings of the doctors who examined Aman before his death and also that of the one who conducted the postmortem. I feel leading criminal lawyers and medical experts should study the evidence and find out if the accused are really responsible for the death,or there could be some different cause, he said.
We are going to knock the doors of the High Court, which I hope will take into account those gaps, said Dr Verma, who extended sympathies to Amans father Rajender Kachroo and appreciated his campaign against ragging. He condemned ragging and said he was in favour of curbing the crime and not making the accused criminals instead of reforming them.
