Veterans celebrate Battle Honour Day

Veterans of 16 Punjab (Patiala) and their families met at Shivalik Officers Institute,Chandimandir,to celebrate the occasion of the 44th Barki Day (Battle Honour) on Thursday.

Veterans of 16 Punjab (Patiala) and their families met at Shivalik Officers Institute,Chandimandir,to celebrate the occasion of the 44th Barki Day (Battle Honour) on Thursday. Maj General (Retd) J S Bhullar,who was the Commanding Officer during the Battle of Barki in 1965,recollected the valour and deeds of the officers and men of the unit.

The unit was tasked to capture and demolish the bridge on Ichhogil canal near Barki village,14 kilometers east of Lahore,which was very well-fortified.

The battalion invaded the minefields to move forward to attack the enemy defences.

“So fierce was the assault that the enemy deserted their fire trenches and bunkers and tried to return by crossing the canal. In the melee and confusion of battle,they destroyed the bridge themselves. Many Pakistani soldiers were seen jumping into the canal. The battalion thus achieved the assigned task and objective,” said Maj General Bhullar.

Twenty-one Indian soldiers were killed and 50 were wounded in the battle.

The unit received one Vir Chakra,one Vashist Seva Medal and three Sena Medals as gallantry awards.

16 Punjab(Patiala) is presently located at Gurdaspur (Tibri).

Among the senior veterans who attended the dinner were Col Ranjit Singh,Col PC Sharma,Col B S Rangi,Col K Y S Minhas,Brig Sarai and Brig Nawab Singh.
