The practice of making children take part in numerous school functions has come under the scanner of the UT Education department. In an order,the department issued certain guidelines to heads of private as well as government schools regarding the participation of students in various programmes of the Administration or VIP visits and
functions organised by other agencies.
Schools have also been directed that students will not carry any flags for the welcome ceremony of VIP/VVIPs. It was also mentioned that no student from Classes I to V,X and XII will be asked to take part in such functions.
The principals have also been told to ensure clean drinking water facility,ambulance/medical assistance,refreshments for students and route demarcation along with traffic regulations for such functions.
The organisers will also have to provide transportation to students who participate in the function. School teachers/officials must accompany the students in the ratio of 1:30 and no participation will be permitted during the examination days,reads the circular.
Students should not be made to wait for more than 30 minutes for any function/ gathering and no function/ rally/ march should extend beyond 90 minutes.
No function is to be organised during extreme climatic conditions while the total distance to be covered by students on foot for any rally/activity should not be more than 2 kilometers.
The participation of students should be voluntary or motivational but in no way compulsory while the loss of studies due to participation in a particular event will have to be covered by holding special classes and if the activities/function is held on a holiday,it must be compensated.
Students should be made to participate only in functions/ activities /events organised by the Education department or with prior permission of the department in case any other agency wants to organise one.
