UT Administrator’s Advisory Council reconstituted,several members retained

With its term having ended several months back,the Administrator’s Advisory Council was reconstituted on Thursday.

With its term having ended several months back,the Administrator’s Advisory Council was reconstituted on Thursday. While some members from the previous committee have been retained,some changes have also been made. The size of the Advisory Council has been trimmed from 42 to 34.

The Advisory Council is a body comprising experts from different fields to advise the Administrator about issues concerning the city. The term of the council is two years. The previous Advisory Council was constituted on April 1,2010. After completion of its term,the council was given a year’s extension. Among the additions to the Advisory Council this time are senior BJP leader Satya Pal Jain,PGI director,Panjab University vice-chancellor,Prof Emeritus and art historian B N Goswami,entrepreneur Yasho Saboo,Joint Secretary Ministry of Urban Development and Joint Secretary (UT),Ministry of Home Affairs.

Members of political parties have been given representation in the Advisory Council. These include BJP president Sanjay Tandon,Congress president BB Bahl,CPI general secretary Devi Dayal Sharma and SAD leader Harjinder Kaur. Local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal is also a member of the council. By virtue of their positions,the chairman of Zila Parishad and chairman of CII are also the members.

Among those who were also members in the previous term are first chief architect of the city MN Sharma,Fr Sebastian Jose,president of Chandigarh Beopar Mandal Charanjiv Singh,Madhu Sarin,theatre thespian Neelam Mansingh Chaudhary,Major General MS Kandal (Retd) and academician Manju Jaidka. Retired bureaucrats KS Raju,Harish C Sethi,CL Bains,Deepa Singh Jain and VK Kapoor have also been retained. So have Justice (Retd) SS Sodhi and Justice (Retd) Kuldeep Singh.

Over the past three years,the Advisory Council has not been very active. In fact,meetings have been few and far. Six meetings were held in the past three years with no concrete decisions being taken.
