City government schools witnessed confusion and chaos over their closing time on Saturday. In the wake of Zila Parishad elections, the UT Education Department announced that schools will close at 11.30 am which was later changed to 1 pm. This led to confusion not only among the school staff but also parents who started reaching schools at 11.30 am to take their wards home.
While as per the earlier communication from District Education Officer (DEO) Chanchal Singh, schools announced that they would only remain open only for half a day. Staff and students were informed about this decision. In the meantime, when the parents started gathering outside the schools,it was declared that the time has been changed to 1 pm.
As per the separtment officials, there was a communication gap among the schools. As a half day was announced in the schools,it was interpreted by them that the schools will close at 11.30 am,at the time of break, said DEO Chanchal Singh.
While some department officials revealed that this change in timing was done keeping the midday meal in mind because it had already been prepared in the morning. As the midday meal is prepared for students in the evening shift as well, officials suddenly realised that it would go waste. As the second shift starts at 11.30 am,if the schools were to close at this time,no student would have come for the second shift as well. Thus, for the midday meal, the timing was changed to 1 pm.
