This one is for all adventure enthusiasts. MCM DAV College for Women in Sector 36,Chandigarh in association with Indian Mountaineering Foundation,New Delhi is organising a Lead Climbing Competition in its college campus on September 5. The event is being organised in the line of lead climbing competition being organised in select centres of the country to promote adventure sports and encourage participation in such events. The Chandigarh event will bring leading climbers and mountaineers from all over the country. “We hope this will help generate interest towards adventure sports. At MCM we have always encouraged innovative ideas and we are the only educational institution in the region to have a state-of-the-art adventure climbing rock on campus,” says Dr Puneet Bedi,principal,MCM DAV College.

The mammoth rock available at MCM provides students with the rare opportunity of honing their mountaineering skills at home. “The facility is further extended to army officers,bureaucrats and the general public by the college. Students of the college like Divya Gurney have achieved rare feats like becoming the youngest women mountaineer to scale the 19,090 ft high Rudugaira peak,” says Dr Bedi.

Incidentally,the Indian Mountaineering Foundation is introducing the IMF Cups,a series of climbing competitions spread over the country. According to Keerthi Pais,co-chairman,National Sport Climbing Committee,“This move is a special initiation to promote sport climbing on rocks and artificial wall surfaces across the country.” The first competition of the series – Mussoorie Cup – was held at Mussoorie (Uttarakhand) on May 30 and the second competition — Hyderabad Cup — was held on June 3 and 4 at Hyderabad. “The third cup is being conducted at MCM DAV College for Women,Chandigarh. We would like to reach out to as many climbers and to as many regions as possible to make this sport popular,” added Pais.
