chandigarh geenral hosipital, OPDs Currently, all the management work, including entry of patients, maintenance of records, reports, drug prescriptions and investigation reports, is being done manually by doctors and the hospital staff.

In order to do away with long queues in OPDs and unnecessary delay in collecting reports, General Hospital, Sector 6, is all set to switch over to the computerised system by this month-end, on the lines of the other government hospitals in the neighbouring city.

Currently, all the management work, including entry of patients, maintenance of records, reports, drug prescriptions and investigation reports, is being done manually by doctors and the hospital staff. According to the hospital authorities, this not only consumes time, but also requires more manpower.

But, under the new system, all work will be computerised, and all the data will be made available online. Each patient will be given a unique hospital identification (UHID) number, and his details including the medical investigation, medicine prescribed will be put online. If the patient is referred from a primary health centre to the hospital, his medical record can also be accessed.

“Once a patient is enrolled, the hospital will be able to maintain his complete record with his contact details. The doctors will also be able to prescribe the medicines and dosage with the click of a button which can be shared with the hospital pharmacy, unlike earlier, when it was done manually. All data will be secure. This will cut down on a lot of unnecessary time,” said Dr Usha Gupta, principal medical officer.

Apart from complete computerisation, the hospital, which was recently re-located to its new five-storey building, will also start a token system to streamline the entry of patients in the OPDs. Each patient will be given a token, and the number will be displayed on the digital display board, according to which they will be attended to by the doctor. LEDs will be installed to give an overview of all the departments in the hospital.

Picture archiving and communication system (PACS) is also being installed to allow the doctors to transfer the medical reports, including X-ray and CT scan, within the hospital departments or share with other doctors, as per the requirement of the patient’s treatment. So, whether it is to view a dispatched report or to check the pending ones, all can be done with the click of a button.

“We hope to launch the system by May-end; preparations are going in full swing. We are also providing training to the hospital staff to prepare them for the new system,” added Dr Gupta.
