To boycott classes till Tuesday Blaming the university for not providing adequate facilities, students of the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS),Panjab University, held a protest in the department on Thursday. The agitated students also submitted a representation of their demands to the vice-chancellor and have decided to boycott classes till Tuesday. Over 100 students raised slogans against the authorities for not meeting their long pending demands in spite of repeated reminders. The students alleged that the university was meting out step-motherly treatment to the department by not releasing funds for its development. The university has not given any funds for either the placement cell or the alumni cell. This is a very crucial year for the department as well as the students as the first batch will be graduating in a few months. The department should concentrate on placing the final year students and utilise the money sanctioned for the placement cell, said Saurabh Gupta,a student. The protestors also alleged that the parking space provided to students was not sufficient. The officials have been assuring us for the last five years that they will make spacious parking space for the department but the project has not made any headway. With so many cars, there is utter chaos once the classes get over, rued another student. The students also complained about the lack of facilities in the canteen including insufficient seating arrangements and unclean surroundings. Talking to Newsline,Professor P S Jaswal,Head of the department, maintained that the department was aware of the students requirements. We are looking into the matter and are keen to help them in the best possible way. We have already asked the Engineering wing to speed up the process of constructing a spacious parking lot. Students need to understand that such tasks cannot be completed overnight. They should cooperate with the department and maintain calm, he said.
