Confusion prevailed at Dr S S B University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology (UICET), Panjab University (PU), on Tuesday, after the department selected only 10 students for admission to ME (Food Technology) instead of 16, which it had stated on its website. While all eligible candidates were called for counselling, the students were shocked when they found that the final merit list carried the name of only 10 students. “The website of the department mentions that the course has 10+6 seats, and even when we asked the teachers during counselling, they confirmed that there are 16 seats. But, they selected only 10 students,” said one of the aggrieved students on conditions of anonymity. Out of the 10 students, eight are from the general category, while two are from reserved categories. “This is unjustifiable. We were counting upon the six additional seats to get admission into the institute, but the last minute decision of the department can prove detrimental for our career,” said another student. Professor U S Shivhare, Chairperson, UICET, said, “We require sometime to look into the issue, and check the website as well where the information has been provided. It is only after proper analysis that we will be able to take a decision.” He asked the students to wait till Wednesday to find out the final decision.
