Two-day police remand for Baba Pritpal

Head of Gurdwara Gur Sagar Sabha,Baba Pritpal Singh, who is facing allegations in a land grab case, was sent to two-day police remand by a local court on Sunday.

Head of Gurdwara Gur Sagar Sabha,Baba Pritpal Singh, who is facing allegations in a land grab case, was sent to two-day police remand by a local court on Sunday. He was arrested by the Special Crime Investigation Cell of Chandigarh police from a village in Ludhiana yesterday.

While Senior Standing Counsel for UT Administration,Anupam Gupta, requested the court of Duty Magistrate Amit Sharma to send Singh to 10-day police remand,Sharma reduced the period, following a long argument on the remand.

During argument,Gupta likened the case to Hindi movie Bunty and Babli ,where two fraudsters had sold off the Taj Mahal through fake documents. “This is like Bunty and Babli where Taj Mahal is sold off in such a manner,” said Gupta.

Countering this, defence lawyer Bimal Chandan Bitta said,“I have not seen the movie but I do not understand why my dear friend is talking in the air when facts are being concealed.”

Bitta argued that NRI Kamaljit Kaur, who is being portrayed as the real complainant, had not appeared in the case so far. “This is because the piece of land registered in her name was restored to her and money was deposited in her account,” he said. “The land registry was in five names as five owners were involved. While the other four gave their consent, the power of attorney of the fifth was used. But this is to be pointed out that the power of attorney was attested by tehsildar. So if it was a forged GPA,why has no action been taken against the tehsildar?” he said, asking how was Singh held responsible for it.

“He always offered cooperation in the case,” Bitta said. Singh was present in the court. The defence argued all documents required by the police were provided and nothing needed to be recovered from him now. Besides,Bitta also took the plea that Singh was a heart patient.

Disciples throng court
Showing solidarity with Baba Pritpal Singh, his followers thronged the court and chanted religious hymns throughout, braving the chill and rain. Continuous recital of prayers went on during the one-and-half-hour gap between argument and order by the Duty Magistrate.
