Two masked men in kurta-pyjamas killed the 4 jawans in Bathinda: Army major in FIR

Major Shukla says it is suspected that the jawans were killed with an INSAS rifle that was stolen from the Army unit on April 9.

Police registered an FIR against two unidentified people who were allegedly wearing kurta-pyjamas and had their faces covered with cloth when they shot dead four Army jawans at a military barrack in Bathinda, Punjab, on Wednesday.

As per the complaint lodged by Major Ashutosh Shukla of 80 Medium Regiment of Artillery with the Bathinda police, the four jawans were staying in a barrack adjacent to the officers mess.

Major Shukla further said in his complaint that all the four jawans were sleeping in their respective rooms in pairs of two after having completed their duty on Tuesday night. He said that around 4.30am he was informed by another jawan of the unit that a firing incident had taken place at the barrack.

Major Shukla stated that when he reached the spot along with another officer of the unit, he saw two men of medium height and good build, wearing kurta-pyjamas, with one of them having an INSAS rifle in his hand and another with an axe. Both had their faces and heads covered with cloth, he added. He further said the two fled from the spot on seeing him and ran towards an adjacent forest.

Major Shukla said that he found that the bodies of the four jawans were riddled with bullets and that empty shells of the INSAS rifle were lying on the ground. He further said an INSAS service rifle was stolen from the unit on April 9 and that investigations in the incident were in progress. He said that it was suspected that four jawans had been killed with the stolen INSAS rifle.
