A 45-year-old man today alleged that he and his three other friends were duped of over Rs 10 lakh by two persons, one of them a woman,on the pretext of sending them to Canada for jobs.

According to a police officer investigating the case, the accused have been identified as Steve Ralph,69,and his assistant Arpana Nagpal,30,and are currently absconding, police said.

In 2008,William Masih, who works at a private scientific laboratory in Ludhiana, along with his three friends had approached the two for seeking a job in Canada.

“The accused, who were operating from their residence at Sector 40,had promised Masih and his friends to get them employed in Canada. They also promised to get their visas approved and charged them Rs 10,25,000 in return for their services,” the officer said.

Masih in his complaint alleged that whenever he approached the accused asking them about the progress on their applications, the accused would tell them that they had forwarded their visa applications and were awaiting a reply from the Canadian Embassy. As time passed and Masih did not get any response from the accused he grew suspicious and informed the police on Saturday.

“By the time we reached the premises from where the accused were operating they had already escaped. A case has been registered and further investigation is in progress,” he added.
