Defending its decision to invite applications for admissions to the MBBS course after the last date of June 24,the Chandigarh administration on Monday informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the decision was taken to allow meritorious students who could not apply earlier to seek admission now.
In its reply filed through Director Principal of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Sector 32,Atul Sachdev, the Chandigarh administration further informed that since the selection process for the MBBS course is based only on the merit of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET),such an opportunity would attract more meritorious candidates for the 50 additional seats.
The High Court had earlier issued a notice to GMCH,Director-Principal and the UT administration, after a student filed a petition seeking directions to quash the decision to invite fresh applications for admission to the MBBS course after the last date.
The petitioner alleged several students were given admission in the first round of counselling though their applications were incomplete. The controversy has arisen on account of the administrations action to invite fresh applications for admission to 50 seats of the MBBS course. The additional seats were available due to an increase in intake capacity, permitted by the Medical Council of India as a one-time measure all over the country.
