Three students lost their lives while three others sustained serious injuries in separate road accidents in Mohali and Patiala districts on Tuesday.
In a head-on collision between an SUV and a truck near Liberty Chowk in Rajpura around 2.30 am,Gagandeep Singh (23),a resident of Phase VI,Mohali,and Gaurav Verma (22) of Delhi died on the spot while their friends Jorawar Singh and Jaskaran Singh of Patiala,also in their early 20s,are struggling for life at PGI,the police said.
Police said the four,who were students of a Patiala college,were travelling in a Ford Endeavour when a truck coming from the opposite side hit the SUV near Liberty Chowk. The vehicle lost balance and skidded off the road.
The victims were shifted to the hospital where Gagandeep and Gaurav were declared dead on arrival while Jorawar and Jaskaran were admitted in a critical condition, the police said,adding that the truck driver fled the spot.
We have booked him for rash and negligent driving and causing deaths and injuries, said an officer.
Jorawar is the son of a Punjab Civil Service (PCS) officer,who was posted as sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) and presently residing in Patiala,police said.
In another accident on the Kharar-Banur Road opposite Shivalik Enclave in Kharar at around 2.15 pm,an 18-year-old was killed while his friend sustained serious injuries when a speeding bus hit their motorcycle. Police said Rupinder Singh died while Gursewak Singh (18) was fighting for life.
The teenagers were in the first year doing electronics diploma at Chandigarh Group of Colleges in Gharuan village near Kharar. They were residents of Dafarpur village near Dera Bassi,Investigating Officer (IO) Raghbeer Singh told Newsline.
The officers said the students were returning home from college when a recklessly driven CTU bus,coming from behind,while trying to overtake hit the motorbike.
Rupinder was declared dead on arrival at Kharar Civil Hospital and Gursewak has been referred to PGIMER. The driver has been booked for causing death and injuries,the police officer said.
