Kalka man fined Rs 5,000 for filing false consumer complaint
The Chandigarh Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-I has fined a Kalka resident Rs 5,000 for filing a false,frivolous,vexatious complaint to harass a Sector 22-based trader. Sumer Singh Saini of Kalka had complained that a pair of coir mattresses purchased from the traders shop in June 2010 had started giving an unbearable,pungent smell. He demanded compensation,but refused to allow the trader to inspect the mattress. The Forum observed that the complainant cannot be allowed to use the court as a money spinning machine.
Exhibition,competition to raise drugs,tobacco awareness
The Sikh Missionary College,an institute in Sector 34D,organized an exhibition of posters to create awareness of the increasing menace of drugs among the youth. Key speakers on the occasion were Gurveer Singh,director,and Dr Kamaljeet,former principal of Government College,Sector 46. The institution will be organizing various competitions on May 31,Anti-Tobacco Day,at 9 am at in their various centers in the city. The competitions will involve poster and T-shirt making by students on anti-tobacco and anti-drug themes.
Muslim body seeks help on mosques,madrassas,teachers appointments
The United Progressive Muslim Front held a press conference Saturday to demand action by the UT Administration on issues like the regularisation of mosques,which they said were facing problems. Spokesperson of the Front,Arshad Khan,said that madrassas were in need of at least 25 computers,and that the Haj Committee needs to be reinstated in Chandigarh. Khan also sought the recruitment of Urdu teachers under the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan. He demanded that health camps be organised in colonies and sectors with sizeable Muslim populations.
