In an effort to sensitise students about the changing climate and to involve them in bringing about a change,The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) launched the local chapter of The Climate EduXchange Initiative at St Kabir School on Wednesday.
The project has been started in association with IT company,DELL. The primary objective of this partnership is to create a motivated force of students, who through technological advancements are aware of and concerned about the environment and its associated problems.
Around 50 government, private and public schools will be involved in the project with 100 students from each school.
It will focus on the findings of Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC) to disseminate knowledge to students and teachers and promote engagement on these issues with students in other parts of the country.
Site Director of Dell,Mohali,Sandeep Gulati, said: Climate change is a sensitive issue today that has gripped the attention of many. Creating awareness and educating students about the same needs to be supplemented with a robust platform that facilitates dialogue and discussion.
The project will use internet as one of its main tools. An interactive web repository will be setup that will connect all schools and provide a platform of knowledge and sharing of experiences. Individual schools will develop a webpage, which will connect to the main home page. All materials developed, will be promoted through the webpage, including newsletters. The content displayed will be generated by students and teachers, said project coordinator with Dell,Ranjan Saika.
She added that initiation, sensitisation and capacity building workshops, interactive sessions, discussion forums and field trips will be conducted for teachers and students on a regular basis. Stress will be laid on approaches that facilitate the sharing of information, knowledge and ideas keeping the focus and connection to the key issues of environment.
