With the 45-day free coaching classes for various competitive examinations failing to start this year, thousands of engineering and medical aspirants in the state are a disappointed lot. The classes through Education Satellite (EDUSAT) were to start from March 22,but it could not be done due to a technical fault in the system.
Last year, over 1,700 students from rural areas cracked competitive exams like CET,AIEEE and PMT and they had given credit to the EDUSAT coaching for their success.
Inspired by their seniors, over 10,000 students of government schools, for whom the classes are free, and several from private schools had got themselves registered for the coaching.
According to government officials, the classes may now start from the second week of May,but students are worried because they may not be able to cover the 45-day course before the examinations.
Our seniors had received good coaching through EDUSAT last year, but it seems we are not going to get the opportunity, said a student who had enrolled herself for engineering classes.
Under EDUSAT programme, students are coached by experts through videoconference.
Mandeep Sharma,in-charge of EDUSAT for Doaba and Majha regions, said the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and a team of scientists from the USA were working on the technical fault. Till the problem is rectified,he added, teachers of government schools had been asked to attend to students enrolled for the classes.
The EDUSAT programme was started in the state in 2008 after successful results of two pilot projects in Nawanshahr and Tarn Taran districts. The classes aimed to prepare the students of remote areas for competitive exams even have professors from IITs coaching students. Students are also provided with study material under the programme.
