The robbers who struck at the Sector-33 house of businessman Lalit Behl after holding him hostage on the Chandigarh-Delhi National Highway two days ago were so desperate for money that they were not ready to let their effort go waste that night at any cost, police said on Friday. Before taking Lalit to his home, the robbers had reportedly asked him how much money he kept at his residence.
If you dont have enough money at your home, take us to any of your rich friends house. We will rob them and later let you off. We want at least Rs 8 to 10 lakh, Lalit told the police, quoting the accused.
Inspector General of Police Shanti Kumar Jain said: The robbers were ready to strike anywhere. It seems they were very much confident of their modus operandi.
Lalits family was not only robbed of gold jewellery worth Rs 4.5 lakh,Rs 4.5 lakh in cash and US$500,but also of 35 litres of scotch whiskey of different brands, the police said.
Senior Superintendent of Police S S Srivastava said they had been investigating the case on scientific lines and had got some initial leads. He said patrolling had been intensified, especially during nights. The robbers will be behind the bars soon. We also need cooperation of the general public to maintain law and order. They should inform the police control room if they come across any suspicious person or activity around them, he said.
Expert hired to prepare sketches
The police have hired an expert to draw the sketches of the robbers. We have asked a professional from Amritsar to make the sketches according to the description provided by Lalit and his family members. The family is satisfied with the work, said the SSP.
According to sources, the sketches were prepared with the help of computer. They are very accurate and we hope to catch the accused soon. The sketches are likely to be released in a day or two, said an officer.
High-resolution cameras on NH
The Chandigarh Police have been running a trial of high-resolution closed-circuit cameras at the Chandigarh-Zirakpur barrier for the last two days to step up their vigil. IG Jain said the cameras were capable of capturing a clear image of the driver of a vehicle.
We have learnt a few lessons from the robbery. Sufficient lighting arrangements will be made at the points where cameras will be installed. Also, speed breakers will come up in the range of the cameras so that they get enough time to take photographs, said the IG.
