Even as the process to review populist subsidies in Punjab is under way,the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made it clear on Wednesday that the review should be carried out in totality and not in a selective way.
The BJPs stand will make the task of the review committee harder. The state BJP is unwilling to see its core constituents, essentially the urban voters, being taxed and the others left out through the subsidy mode. Amid reports on octroi being imposed again, state BJP president Rajinder Bhandari said,The SAD-BJP Government is in no mood to re-impose octroi.
The state Governments decision to review its subsidies, essentially out of the compulsion to impose fiscal discipline in the state to avail of monetary gains from the centre, comes within days of its announcement of Rs 1,300-crore additional subsidy to the power board.
Information commissioner assesses ground situation
