On pretext of study visa to UK, Himachal woman ‘raped’ during fake medical check-up in Kharar

A 32-year-old woman from Himachal Pradesh was lured with the promise of a study visa to the UK and later raped during a fake medical examination in Kharar town of Mohali district by an immigration company employee, who also filmed the obscene act, police said.

The woman, who claimed to have been extorted of Rs 2.20 lakh, approached the Chandigarh IT Park police station, where a Zero FIR was registered on November 2, over eight months after the crime took place on February 2. The case was later transferred to Kharar city police.

Based on the woman’s complaint, police booked Abhishek Kumar, a resident of Kharar, under sections 318/4 (fraud) and 64/1 (rape) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), a police officer said.

According to the FIR, the woman, who works at a private firm in Chandigarh and is married, came in contact with the accused on January 3. The accused introduced himself as an employee of Rudradev Immigration Company and assured her of a study visa to the UK, the woman stated in the FI. The accused later told her to undergo a mandatory medical test for the visa application, she stated.

Initially, the accused booked an online trial for the medical examination, but later told the woman that there were some network and camera glitches, and insisted she come to Kharar for an in-person medical test, according to the FIR.

When the woman reached Kharar, he took her to a hotel on the pretext of a medical examination and sexually assaulted her while recording the obscene act, the woman alleged in the FIR.

The woman alleged that the accused then started blackmailing her using the obscene video and extorted Rs 2.20 lakh and had been demanding another Rs 5 lakh while threatening to set her up in a case.

The woman approached the Chandigarh Police with evidence, leading to the registration of the case, police said.

Police said the accused is at large and efforts are underway to trace and arrest him.
