Students join signature campaign seeking ban on landmines

The Un Disarmament Week celebrations being observed by the Student Human Rights Network in collaboration with Human Rights and Duties,Centre for Emerging Areas in Social Sciences,Panjab University,concluded on Friday at Aruna Ranjit Chandra Hall in PU.

The Un Disarmament Week celebrations being observed by the Student Human Rights Network (SHRN),in collaboration with Human Rights and Duties,Centre for Emerging Areas in Social Sciences,Panjab University,concluded on Friday at Aruna Ranjit Chandra Hall in PU.

A paper-reading competition on the topic of ‘disarmament’ was organised which saw the participation of several students. A signature campaign to ban landmines was also launched by the faculty members,students and members of SHRN.

“India is not a party to the Mine Ban Treaty. Unfortunately,India remains one of the largest producers of mines. It is a matter of concern that so many armed personnel and civilians are killed and injured due to landmines,” said B S Gill,Chief Patron,SHRN.

As part of the celebrations,a powerpoint presentation on ‘Peace and Security Through Disarmament’ was given by Upneet Mangat,lecturer,Human Rights and Duties,PU.

The function was inaugurated by Professor B S Ghuman,chief coordinator,Centre for Emerging Areas in Social Sciences.

He encouraged members of SHRN to work with a people-centric approach while Swarnjit Kaur,coordinator,Human Rights and Duties department,lauded the efforts of SHRN.

Other faculty members present on the occasion included coordinator Professor R K Sharma and lecturer Akshat Mehta of the Police Administration. Professor Ghuman had also inaugurated SHRN,a recently formed organisation by students of Panjab University and other institutions to work for spreading awareness of human rights and highlighting its violations.

“Our objective is to protect and defend human rights,” said Deepikaa Gupta,president of SHRN.
