Stormy session on cards; Congress insists on extension

With the Opposition Congress demanding an extension of the Monsoon session and set to raise more then a dozen other issues including law and order, tomorrow Assembly proceedings are expected to be stormy.

Speaking with The Indian Express,Leader of the Opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal said,“We are demanding an extension of the Monsoon session which started on September 24 (Friday). September 25 and 26 formed a weekend and September 27 and 28 were holidays. Now the session will be held in the afternoon of September 29 and in the morning on September 30 and October 1 — effectively making it just a two-and-a-half day session. At the Business Advisory Committee meeting on September 24,our party members had raised the point that the session should be extended. The Business Advisory Committee’s report will be laid in the House tomorrow. After that if the House is extended fine; otherwise we will raise the issue and demand an extension.”

“Besides this,we want answers from the government and a proper debate on more than a dozen issues. The government should tell the people where all the Central funds given to the state have been spent, for what purposes the state government has been taking loans and where all the money from these loans has been spent. The government should also give clarifications on the Aero city controversy — about the players and those who have been given plots, about the various issues regarding employees, about why no recruitments have been made. The government must also state what it is doing about the problem of cancer as so many deaths have occured, the worsening law and order situation in the state, and what all the SAD-BJP has done till date to fulfill the many promises it had made to the people in it’s election manifesto,” Bhattal said.

She alleged that the SAD-BJP government is shying away from all these important issues as it has no answers and charged that it has kept the session so short to prevent the Opposition from raising or debating the issues. “We will protest in a democratic way and accordingly plan our strategy. If necessary,we will walk out from the House as this government is murdering democracy in the state,” Bhattal claimed. Asked whether former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh would be attending tomorrow’s Assembly session as he has been reinstated by the Supreme Court to the Vidhan Sabha, she said,“I hope he comes to the session tomorrow.”
