Step it up

Saroj Khan is ready to turn director; the film will also mark veteran actor Kader Khan’s return

With the age to retire from active choreography nearing,it is Saroj Khan’s unwillingness to retire from the industry altogether that has had her consider film direction. “I know that it is a matter of few years before I have to give up choreography. But I am not yet ready to give up the film industry . I have been a technical person throughout my career and the role of director suits me best,” admits the 62-year-old.

The veteran choreographer is making her filmmaking debut with a thriller-drama. The script is being worked on by both scriptwriter Robin Bhatt and writer and comedian Kader Khan, who has been living in Canada for the past few years. The film, untitled as of now, will go on the floors in October. Though the cast is not finalised yet,the producers are negotiating with Preity Zinta for the role, which will be central to the film. The movie will, however, have two lead male actors — one will be a newcomer; while the production team is in talks with an A-list actor for the other, which will be a special appearance.

Almost a year ago,Khan had announced her directorial debut along with Eros,Sati, starring Priyanka Chopra in the lead. “But Priyanka was committed to UTV for three films and the project got postponed,” she explains.

The film will be shot extensively in the UK and Australia. “Kader Khan will return as an actor for sure. But we are hoping he also agrees to lend his support on the dialogues and script,” she adds. The music will be composed by Rajesh Roshan, says Rajiv Mehrotra of Cut To The Chase Productions which is producing the film.

One expects Khan to debut with a musical but the veteran explains her choice. “It was a conscious decision. A musical is what people expect from me,and if the music is good, there is no doubt I’ll make a good one. But a thriller poses a challenge and I took it up because I want to prove myself. I did that years ago as the first woman choreographer and I will prove myself once again,” she asserts.

Currently shooting for Colors’ dance talent hunt television show Chak Dhoom Dhoom as a judge,Khan insists that a step towards filmmaking will not mark the end to her career as a choreographer. “That is my first love and will always remain so.”
