Sound Sync

The mixing together of heavy bass of jazz,foot-tapping hip hop,head-banging rock and off-beat reggae, might sound like an odd combination, but filmmaker Thibault de Longeville has successfully managed to combine the different genres in his 30-minute black-and-white documentary Art of Blending.

Featuring interviews with prominent R&B,hip hop and jazz artistes, including The Roots,Erykah Badu,Chaka Khan and Q-Tip,the documentary that was uploaded on Facebook on June 30,is already receiving rave reviews. “It was great to see how music, culture and photography can be blended. This is my version of Bruce Weber’s 1988 film Let’s Get Lost, based on Chet Baker, the famous jazz trumpeter,” says Longeville, who embarked on the idea of making the “Jazz-ementary” seven years ago.

Known for his critically acclaimed TV series,Just For Kicks,Longeville’s taste in music and filmmaking is heavily inspired by his African-American upbringing and his stay in France and the US. “But I will always be partial to African music, because I grew up with that music: jazz, hip hop and tribal.”

Meanwhile, the US-based filmmaker is also looking forward to feedback from India. “Hip hop fans in India should connect with the music,” he adds.
