A fresh spell of snowfall in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday led to the closure of 518 roads and five National Highways in the state. On Saturday, 485 roads remained closed.
Officials said 161 roads have been closed in Shimla, followed by 157 roads and two national highways in Lahaul and Spiti, 71 roads and 2 NHs in Kullu, 69 roads in Chamba and 46 roads in Mandi district. One NH and 13 roads have been closed in Kinnaur.
According to the Himachal Pradesh disaster management department, 478 transformers and 567 water supply schemes have also been disrupted.
Kalpa in Kinnaur received 6 cm of snow, followed by 5 cm in Shillaro and Bharmar hills of Kangra. It snowed 4 cm in Gondla area of Lahaul and Spiti while 3 cm of snowfall was received in Hansa and Keylong. In Kufri, Khadrala and Narkanda areas of Shimla, 2 cm each snowfall was reported.
It rained 40 mm in Bijhai in Hamirpur, followed by 16 mm in Chopal in Shimla, 13 mm each in Joginder Nagar in Kangra and Slappar in Mandi. Banjar valley in Kullu received 11 mm rainfall, as per the weather bulletin of India Meteorological Department. While Kukumseri area of Lahaul and Spiti recorded the lowest minimum temperature of -4.9 degrees Celsius, the maximum temperature of 20.3 degrees Celsius was recorded in Dhaulakuan of Sirmaur district.
The orange warning for snowfall across Himachal Pradesh issued by the local weather office on Saturday evening has been changed to yellow warning of thunderstorms, lightning and hail storm with heavy snow at isolated places on Sunday.
As per the weather forecast, it will rain at isolated places in the lower hills of Himachal Pradesh while heavy precipitation is expected in the middle and high hills of Himachal Pradesh in the next 4-5 days.
Meanwhile, rains lashed most parts of Punjab and Haryana on Sunday, while the minimum temperature stayed above the season’s average.
Many areas, including Chandigarh, Mohali, Hisar, Ambala, Ludhiana and Patiala, received rain, according to the MeT department. Among other places in Punjab, Amritsar recorded a minimum of 10.4 degrees Celsius, five degrees above normal, while Ludhiana and Patiala recorded their minimum temperatures of 11.1 and 11.6 degrees Celsius respectively, up to five degrees above normal. Pathankot, Bathinda, Faridkot and Gurdaspur recorded a minimum of 9.4, 8.6, 10.8 and 8 degrees Celsius, respectively.
In Haryana, Ambala recorded a minimum of 11.8 degrees Celsius while Hisar’s minimum was 11.1 degrees Celsius.
Karnal, Narnaul, Rohtak, Bhiwani and Sirsa registered lows of 11.6, 11, 12.4, 11 and 12.2 degrees Celsius respectively.
Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, recorded a minimum of 11.9 degrees Celsius, three degrees above normal.
Rainfall in isolated places is expected in Haryana as well in the next few days.
