An SMS pertaining to leakage of a question paper along with a few questions of the allegedly leaked paper which appeared on the mobile phone of Vice Chancellor (VC) of Punjab Technical University (PTU) during the wee hours of May 19,not only made the VC restless but also put the entire PTU staff on its toes for hours. Later,PTU authorities found that it was a prank played by some students of an engineering college affiliated to PTU. The alleged leaked paper was scheduled for May 19 itself.
After a hectic exercise of four hours the paper was conducted on the same day at 9.30 am . PTU authorities smell some gang behind such mischief which is not only misleading the students but also charging money to provide them self-made question papers in the name of original question papers meant for the exams.
PTU sources informed that in the wee hours of May 19 PTU VC,Dr Rajneesh Arora received an SMS from someone mentioning that the question paper of Fluid Mechanics of fourth semester of Engineering had been leaked. The paper was to be held a few hours after this SMS on the same day.
The SMS made the VC jump out of bed and start making calls to all PTU officials, said sources while adding that the PTU VC even sent the flying squads comprising officials of PTU and Punjabi University to all the 16 nodal centres from where question papers were distributed to the various colleges under PTU.
The original question paper was collected back from all the colleges at the nodal centres at 7 am and matched with the one that appeared in the SMS. Officials found that not a single question matched and so there was no leakage.
Again, the question papers were sent back to the colleges and the paper was conducted at the scheduled time.
PTU has identified the student who sent the SMS to the VC,said sources, while adding that the student was summoned to PTU premises where he admitted to his crime and also named a few more students who were involved.
PTU sources also informed that during the questioning of the student it was felt that there could be some gang operating behind it. As it has also come to light that some question papers are being prepared before the exams on the pattern of some guess papers and being distributed among the students by charging Rs 2,000 per paper on the pretext of giving them original question paper, said PTU sources.
When contacted,PTU Advisor to VC Dr Nachhattar Singh confirmed the entire incident and said they had identified some students including the one who had sent the SMS to the VC. We are gathering more details as we feel that there is more than we see, added he.
He said that after gathering all details the university will decide about the action to be taken against these students as well.
