Ahead of Lok Sabha polls scheduled next year, the farm organisations across Punjab on Sunday submitted “warning letters” to MPs listing out their pending demands, on the call given by Sanyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM).
The letters urged MPs to raise the voice of farmers in Parliament. Farm leaders said that as per the collective decision taken by SKM, they will now take their fight – to get pending demands fulfilled – to Lok Sabha polls 2024 and they will vehemently oppose BJP in the elections next year.
The farmers accused the BJP-led Centre of doing nothing to fulfill their demands which were duly accepted by it on December 9, 2021, when the protest over the now-repealed three controversial central agri laws was ended at borders of Delhi.
In a meeting on April 30, the SKM had announced to hold protests at the residences/offices of MPs (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) from May 26 to 31.
On Sunday, farmers assembled at various places and headed towards residences/offices of MPs to hand over memorandums. The farmer leaders said that when they had ended their protest at Delhi borders, the government had assured them to fulfill their various demands but nothing has been done on the ground even after one and a half years.
The farmer organisation – BKU Ekta Ugrahan – has decided to hand over the memorandums to MPs on Monday.
BKU Dakonda and Kirti Kisan Union leaders and activists handed over letters to MPs which said that if politicians fail to raise their voice in Parliament, then farmers will boycott their campaign for Lok Sabha polls 2024 and will also not allow them to hold meetings/rallies in their constituencies.
