Signalled to stop, drug peddlers ram speeding bike into Khanna cop

An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) from the Special Branch of Khanna police sustained grievous injuries on Monday while nabbing two drug peddlers who tried to flee the checkpoint when intercepted.

Khanna SSP Amneet Kondal said that a police party from Doraha police station and Special Branch had set up a checkpoint near Cemetry road, Doraha, when two suspected drug peddlers, who were coming on a speeding bike, were signalled to stop for checking. However, instead they hit ASI Sukhdev Singh while trying to evade checking.

“ASI Sukhdev Singh got severe injuries, including fractures on the back, shoulder and other injuries to forehead and eyes,” said the SSP.

Police said that the ASI was rushed to Sidhu Hospital, Doraha, from where he was referred to Amarbir Hospital, Khanna.

Meanwhile, police succeeded in nabbing both suspects and recovered 70 gm heroin from them. The accused were identified as Sikander and Mani, both from Meat market, Khanna.

An FIR against both accused was registered at Doraha police station under Sections 21/61/85 of NDPS Act for heroin recovery and Sections 307, 353,186 and 332 of the IPC for allegedly attacking the cop.

SSP Kondal said that a cheque for Rs 25,000 was handed over to the police officer’s father and wife as immediate financial assistance and they were assured that his medical bills will be reimbursed by the department.

“I visited him in the hospital and we are in touch with doctors. He will be shifted to a bigger hospital for the best treatment, if need be in future,” she said.
