Local MP Navjot Singh Sidhu made an unannounced entry to a press conference being addressed by Amritsar Commissioner of Police Parampal Singh Sidhu on Wednesday,and asked him to control crime in the city without the fear of any political interference. As the city police had come under criticism from several quarters for the rising crime graph,especially chain and purse snatching cases,molestation and robbery,Sidhu said the police could professionally function only if political leaders stayed out of the polices way.

When the commissioner presented data to prove his point that there was no spurt as such and crime was rather under control,describing the various measures being taken to nab criminals,questions were raised over the rising political interference in policing. I want to set an example myself and want that the police should not fear political leaders. If there is any political interference,I will stand up with the police. No political leader can afford to disappoint the public, he said.

The commissioner,meanwhile,denied that there was any political hurdle.

The police are not under any political pressure. We work independently. The crime is under control as we have stepped up patrolling,nabbed criminals,solved murder and robbery cases, he said,adding that there were some rumours of girls having been abducted or molested,but their investigations revealed that there was no such incident. We will act against the rumour mongers also for creating fear among the public, said the commissioner.

Both the MP and the commissioner announced to hold regular police-public meetings to restore the confidence of people. They also announced that 30 places in the city had been identified for installation of CCTV cameras ata cost of Rs 3 crore. The police said they had also launched a drive against people drinking on the roads and the youth who pass comments on women while zipping past in their open jeeps. Any one found misbehaving with women on the street will be punished. People should call the police if they encounter any such incident, said P S Sidhu.
