CM Mann announced on Friday that “mourning notes” will be sounded on December 27 during the Shaheedi Sabha to pay respects to the martyrdom of Sahibzadas. (File Photo)Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) that manages the Gurdwaras Saturday opposed Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s idea of sounding bugles to pay respects to martyrdom of younger sons and mother of Guru Gobind Singh, 10th Sikh Guru, on December 27.
CM Mann announced on Friday that “mourning notes” will be sounded on December 27 during the Shaheedi Sabha to pay respects to the martyrdom of Sahibzadas – Sahibzada Zorawar Singh, 9, Sahibzada Fateh Singh, 7, and their grandmother Mata Gujri Ji.
Responding to idea, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami Saturday said the Punjab CM’s call of sounding mourning bugle is against Gurmat principles, and it should be withdrawn immediately.
Sikhs attend ‘Jor Mela’ at Sirhind every year in the last week of December to remember the martyrdoms.
Mughal governor Wazir Khan had bricked them alive in events sparked by the attack on Anandpur Sahib by the armies of the Mughals and the hill kings of present-day Himachal Pradesh in December 1704. Guru Gobind Singh’s two other sons, Sahibzaada Ajit Singh Ji (18) and Sahibzaada Jujhar Singh Ji (14), were also martyred within a week.
Dhami said the Sahibzadas accepted the martyrdoms with great enthusiasm.
“The CM should pay respect and reverence to the martyrdom of Sahibzadas in light of the Gurmat principles, rather than trying to give a mournful colour to these days,” Dhami said.
The leader said martyrdoms of Sahibzadas are a symbol of Charhdi Kala (high spirit) to protect the rights, truth and dharam and hence they are not sad events.
“In a meeting with the Fatehgarh Sahib district administratio to review the arrangements for Shaheedi Sabha, CM emphasised that, as a mark of respect to the younger Sahibzadas, mourning notes will be sounded from 10 am to 10:10 am on Dec 27,” the Punjab government posted on X.
