SGPC chief ‘hugged’ Chaura before the shooting, claims lawyer

Dal Khalsa leader Kanwar Pal Singh supported this claim, saying, “Dhami and Chaura were acquainted. It wouldn’t surprise me if Dhami hugged Chaura, as Dhami has good relations with many former militants.”

During court proceedings on Wednesday, Narain Singh Chaura, the accused in the alleged attack on former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, told his lawyer that Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami allegedly hugged him on the premises of Darbar Sahib on December 4. Chaura’s lawyer, Jaspal Singh Manjhpur, revealed this while accusing the SGPC of withholding crucial CCTV footage related to the incident.

Chaura, currently in police remand since December 4, was granted an additional three-day remand. The police informed the court that despite multiple requests, the SGPC had not provided CCTV footage from December 2 to 4. They also formally sought the footage through the court.

Manjhpur stated, “Chaura told us that Dhami stopped and hugged him in the Darbar Sahib premises. He has given an estimated time and location of their meeting. Chaura and Dhami know each other, which is why we believe the SGPC is withholding the footage. We fear it may be deleted.”

Dal Khalsa leader Kanwar Pal Singh supported this claim, saying, “Dhami and Chaura were acquainted. It wouldn’t surprise me if Dhami hugged Chaura, as Dhami has good relations with many former militants.”

Dhami, however, denied recognising Chaura. Speaking to the media, he said, “As SGPC president, many people approach me. I cannot confirm if I met him or not.”

Meanwhile, the police informed the court that Chaura’s location had been detected near the Pakistan border in Khemkaran on December 1. The defence argued that Chaura was in the area to attend a function and claimed to have evidence supporting this.

Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) leader Bikram Singh Majithia has been vocal about alleged links between Chaura and senior officials. He recently highlighted footage showing Chaura interacting with ADCP Harpal Singh before the alleged attack, further fuelling suspicions around the incident.
