Sewage overflow on roads leaves Mohali’s Sector 71 residents with foul smell and health hazard

When contacted, Senior Deputy Mayor of Mohali Municipal Committee and local councillor Amrik Singh Somal acknowledged the issue.

Sewage"In such unhygienic conditions, any disease can spread rapidly,” said Sukhdev Singh, who runs Lucky Electricals.

A severe sewage overflow has disrupted daily life for residents and shopkeepers of the area opposite St. Xavier’s School market in Mohali’s Sector 71. Residents are grappling with foul smell, stagnant water, and unhygienic surroundings.

When The Indian Express visited the area on Thursday, it found stagnant, filthy water that flooded the main road, making it nearly impossible to walk.

The green belt nearby, once meant for relaxation, is now filled with broken swings and heaps of garbage — raising serious concerns about the effectiveness of cleanliness drives in the city.

Local shopkeepers voiced their frustration. Kamal, owner of Nagpal Karyana Store, said, “sometimes, the water level rises so much that customers can’t even reach our shops. This filthy water not only stinks but is also a serious health hazard”.

Sukhdev Singh, who runs Lucky Electricals, added, “conditions are worsening by the day. During school hours, when parents drop off or pick up their children, the area becomes extremely crowded. In such unhygienic conditions, any disease can spread rapidly.”

When contacted, Senior Deputy Mayor of Mohali Municipal Committee and local councillor Amrik Singh Somal acknowledged the issue. “We are aware of the problem and steps will be taken soon to resolve it,” he assured.

Meanwhile, both residents and business owners have appealed to the authorities to take urgent action and resolve the sewage crisis to ensure a clean and healthy environment.
